Alice Rooney Senior Designer
Alice studied Communication Design at The Glasgow School of Art after a foundation year in London’s Central Saint Martins. While studying, she took every opportunity to learn making skills and focused on research and creating conceptually driven ideas.
Upon graduating she was able to translate those skills into real graphic design environments and after a three month internship, she registered as self employed and steadily built her own practice. She joined forces with a partner and together they established Design by Zag, a graphic design company based in Glasgow. She gained experience in publication design, websites and branding, event design and management and worked on an array of design projects within a community setting.
Alongside Zag, Alice helped to establish and run The Press, a letterpress studio in Glasgow. Alice was Designer in Residence at The Press, for two years, she created many personal projects, took commissions, ran workshops and hosted events.
Alice was asked to join the team of visiting lecturers at Edinburgh College of Art and has set briefs and run projects for both BA and MA students over the past two years. She has also worked with Communication Design MA students at Glasgow School of Art.
She has a thorough understanding of the principals of typography and believes the use of typography, in conjunction with layout, are the building blocks to great design. Her passions lie in being able to translate graphic design into other mediums, to collaborate and be influenced by people and environments and to explore ideas through the use of shape, colour and letterforms.
In her spare time Alice likes to continue developing other creative skills and attends life drawing classes, The Belfast Print Studio and Belfast’s Late Night Art. Beyond that she loves a good tidy up and eating delicious food!
